It has been my experience that many of us Means's are related and can trace our family history back to four brothers in North Carolina who left NC and spread westward. One went to Birmingham, Alabama and started a steel mill, another did the same thing in Nashville, Tenn., I think. A third (my great-grandfather) was a doctor who settled in what is now Dallas, Texas, and a fourth started a cattle ranch in the Big Bend area in Texas.

My great-grandfather was paid for his medical services with land and ended up with a large plantation just outside of Dallas. Because of illness, my grandfather couldn't stay in Texas, so he ended up practicing law in Denver, Colorado. Most of my family are located in Colorado and Washington State, so we have continued the westward trek.
